Understanding Nifty 50

What is Nifty 50?

Nifty 50 is the flagship benchmark index of India's National Stock Exchange (NSE), tracking the weighted average price of 50 of the largest and most liquid Indian companies across 13 economic sectors. Launched on November 3, 1995 with a base value of 1000, Nifty 50 represents approximately 65% of the free-float market capitalisation of all stocks listed on the NSE. It is the most widely tracked Indian equity benchmark and the underlying for the deepest futures and options market in India.

How Nifty 50 is calculated

The index uses the free-float market capitalisation method. Each of the 50 constituents is weighted by the portion of its market cap that is freely tradable — that is, total shares outstanding minus promoter, government, and other locked-in holdings. The formula is: Index = (Current free-float market cap ÷ Base free-float market cap) × Base value (1000). Values update in real time through the trading session. NSE Indices Ltd reviews the index composition twice a year (March and September), and stocks may be replaced based on liquidity, market cap, and other eligibility criteria.

What moves Nifty 50 on a typical day

Nifty's intraday movement is driven by five interacting forces: sector concentration (banking + IT together hold ~50% Nifty weight, so moves in HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys, TCS or Reliance disproportionately affect the index), FII and DII flows (foreign and domestic institutional buying/selling, reported nightly), global cues (US closing the previous night and Asian markets in-session), macro releases and events (RBI policy, US Fed decisions, CPI, GDP, election outcomes), and options-market positioning (PCR, max pain, and large OI build-up at specific strikes that pin the index near those strikes into expiry).

Trading Nifty 50: cash, futures, options

You cannot buy the Nifty 50 index directly; instead, traders take exposure through three main instruments. Nifty 50 index funds and ETFs (e.g. Nippon India Nifty BeES) for long-term passive investment with no leverage. Nifty 50 futures for leveraged directional positions, with weekly and monthly expiries on NSE. Nifty 50 options (calls and puts) for defined-risk strategies, hedging, and income through option selling. The options chain trades weekly expiries every Tuesday and is the most liquid equity options market in the world. See our live Nifty option chain and strategy builder to construct positions.

How to read this page during the trading session

Use the page in three layers. First, the hero panel tells you where Nifty is and how it's behaving (spot, change, intraday range). Second, the "What's moving Nifty today" commentary explains the why — sector contribution, institutional flow, sentiment shifts. Third, the key levels, sector heatmap, and sentiment dashboard give you the actionable data for positioning: pivot points to plan entries, sector strength to choose long/short exposure, PCR and VIX to gauge market psychology, and FII-DII flow to confirm whether the move has institutional backing.

NSE equity market is open Monday to Friday, 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST. A pre-open auction session runs 9:00–9:15 AM. Equity derivatives trade in the same window. Currency derivatives close at 5:00 PM, and commodity derivatives (MCX) trade until 11:30 PM.
Both track large-cap Indian equities, but they're run by different exchanges and use different baskets. Nifty 50 (NSE) has 50 stocks across 13 sectors. Sensex (BSE) has 30 stocks. Roughly 28 stocks are common to both. Nifty has higher derivatives volume and is the more widely-traded index for F&O.
Nifty 50 is a free-float market-capitalisation-weighted index. The 50 large-cap stocks are weighted by the portion of their market cap that is freely tradable. The formula is: Index = (Current free-float market cap / Base free-float market cap) × Base value (1000). Constituents are reviewed twice a year by NSE's Index Maintenance Sub-Committee.
Nifty movement on any given day is driven by a combination of factors — sector-level performance (banking and IT together carry ~50% Nifty weight), FII and DII net flows in cash and futures, global market cues from the US (overnight) and Asia (in-session), key macro releases (RBI, US Fed, CPI, GDP), India VIX changes, and individual stock news. The "What's moving Nifty today" section above breaks down the day's actual drivers with sector-by-sector contribution analysis.
The Nifty 50 spot value updates every few seconds during market hours (9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday). The current spot price, day's open, high, low, and percentage change are displayed at the top of this page and refresh automatically. Outside market hours, the page shows the previous trading session's closing values.
